Sustainable Fisheries Electrofishing Boat |
|
This booth will feature a 20 foot electrofishing boat, purchased by Sustainable Fisheries Inc. with funding provided by the Fisheries Enhancement Fund. This is the first time that such a craft will be on public display in Manitoba!
Highly specialized equipment on this boat transmits a mild electric charge through the water to stun fish, allowing them to be captured harmlessly. Once monitoring and research are complete, the fish can be reintroduced to the water quickly, minimizing the chance of injury and virtually eliminating mortality. Electrofishing is an important tool allowing fisheries biologists to collect a wide range of fishery data such as species composition, population estimates, and growth rates. This boat will be used by trained personnel working for the Manitoba Fisheries Branch and other organizations throughout the province beginning in 2009.
Visit the Sustainable Fisheries Inc. booth to learn more about this new non-profit organization, whose mission is to promote the conservation and enhancement of freshwater fisheries. Also learn about the Manitoba Fisheries Enhancement Fund, established by the Manitoba Government in 2007 to promote and fund projects that will conserve and enhance the province's recreational fisheries. To date, more than $1,200,000 has been invested in a wide variety of projects involving research, fisheries management, habitat assessment and rehabilitation, public education and creation of new recreational fisheries.
